ARTIST BACKGROUND

Thanks to the perception of a second grade teacher, who recognized a potential for art ability, my art career was launched at an early age. I received a Bachelor Degree in Art Education from Abilene Christian University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from University of North Texas. After several years as an active artist and teacher, fine art was side-lined for a period of time as I focused on my work as an Interior Designer, licensed by the State of Texas. After reaching retirement, fine art once again became my main focus.

ARTIST STATEMENT

When asked to describe my work, the best answer is that I paint in "designed realism" or a "readable abstract" style. While my techniques tend to reflect the rationality and objectivity of my architectural and color theory background, I fully enjoy painting both representationally and abstractly; responding to the qualities of both. The challenge is making a new whole by manipulating elements and materials to give a sense of subject in terms of design and composition rather than realistic description. I'm consistently inspired by the endless substance and variety to be found in pattern, super-imposed shapes and color relationships. Inspiration for subject matter varies with each new body of work. Currently I am exploring complex color relationships, abstract line and flat-shape patterns, and mixed media textural elements in my paintings. The result is most often a combination of representational and abstract images.
